The 2013 Fisker Karma is a premium-large car that uses a plug-in gas/electric drive system similar to the one employed in the Chevrolet Volt. On a full charge, the Karma is designed to go about 50 miles on electric power alone. After that, its gasoline engine turns on and generates electricity to power the car’s electric motors and charge the drive system’s battery. It has a total claimed range of about 300 miles.
The vehicle is produced by U.S. company Fisker Automotive, Inc., but assembled in Finland.
2013 Fisker Karma: What’s New?
The Fisker Karma is largely unchanged for 2013 after its debut for model-year 2012.
2013 Fisker Karma: Model Lineup, Features, and Options
The Karma comes in three models: EcoStandard, EcoSport, and EcoChic. Karma’s list of standard equipment found on the EcoStandard model includes xenon headlights, LED taillights, front-and rear-obstacle detection, one-touch up/down power windows, power front seats, heated front and rear seats, cruise control, steering-wheel audio controls, satellite radio, wireless cell-phone link, touchscreen display, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated, auto-dimming exterior power mirrors with power folding capability. In keeping with the company’s eco-friendly mission, Fisker says the Karma’s interior wood trim has been harvested from eco-friendly sources and the seats’ foam inserts are made from a soy-based compound.
The EcoSport trim level adds a navigation system with voice recognition, rearview camera, upgraded sound system, leather upholstery, and special paint.
The EcoChic model is touted as “animal free” and thus substitutes faux-suede in place of leather upholstery.
2013 Fisker Karma: Engines, Transmissions, and Drive Wheels
The Karma pairs a 2.0-liter gasoline 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor resulting in 403 horsepower total. When the battery is fully charged from a 110-volt wall outlet or a 220-volt charging station, Fisker says the vehicle can go about 50 miles on electricity alone. However, unlike conventional hybrids, the gasoline motor never drives the wheels; it functions as a generator that makes electricity to charge the battery and run the wheels’ electric motors for propulsion.
2013 Fisker Karma: Fuel Economy
The EPA has rated the Karma at the equivalent of 54 mpg in electric-only driving mode. On gasoline, the car is rated at 20 mpg city/21 mpg highway. With a fully-charged battery and full tank of gas, Fisker says the Karma provides a maximum driving range of about 300 miles.
2013 Fisker Karma: Safety Features
The 2013 Fisker Karma has a standard compliment of federally-mandated and expected safety features.
