The 2011 Ford Focus offers a fair amount of passenger space and comfort, but overall, reviewers say that the Focus is an out-of-date entry in a competitive class.
The small car wars are heating up, and most reviewers say that the current Ford Focus needs to get out of the kitchen. Against updated, stylish and fun-to-drive competitors -- including the new Ford Fiesta, the Focus stands out only for its low price and mediocre feel. Still, brighter days may be ahead for the Focus. This year is the last for the current generation, and an all-new model is expected for 2012. Depending on your priorities, you could get a great deal on a 2011 model ahead of the release of the 2012 Focus. Or, if you wait for the 2012 model, you could get a Focus that reviewers expect to be much improved over the current model.
Several reviews say the Focus is worth a look for its low price, but not much else. "Focus feels dated and less refined compared with cars such as the Honda Civic and Nissan Versa," says Consumer Guide. Still, front-seat room and comfort impress, and pricing is competitive." While the Focus offers some innovative features, it loses points for its sluggish engine, mediocre handling and cheap-feeling interior. Reviewers criticize the Focus for these points, but respect it for its good gas mileage. Plus, Ford offers its SYNC and MyKey systems on the Focus, so you can at least get some high-tech features on what is essentially a basic commuter car.
Other Cars to Consider
It’s a great time to be shopping for a small car because there are so many terrific options available. The Kia Forte is considered to be one of the best values in the affordable small car class for its long standard features list, which includes luxury amenities like Bluetooth and Sirius Satellite Radio. Add that to the fact that its base price is nearly $2,000 less than the Focus and the Forte becomes a formidable opponent.
Another car that’s worth a test drive is the Nissan Versa. The Versa has an impressive 50.4 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity, a genuinely comfortable rear seat and a price tag that is around $2,500 less than the Focus. Finally, for those looking for something that is more fun to drive but is still in the same general price range as the Focus, check out the Mazda 3. It’s a favorite in the automotive press for its excellent handling dynamics and sprightly acceleration.
